Diesel-powered machinery and miners are the driving force of the mining industry, and both the reliability of the machines and the health of the miners are essential for a sustainable operation. Any diesel emission control technology must not impact the availability and operation of the equipment.  And miners must be protected from harmful diesel particulate matter (PM) and NO2 gas emitted from the diesel engines.      

What is the Mining CRT technology?

Johnson Matthey was the first to develop and patent the Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®) technology, which combines a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to trap PM from diesel exhaust, while removing CO and HC. The DOC also converts part of the engine NOx to NO2 which reacts with soot to passively regenerate the filter. The ceramic wall-flow DPF removes over 99% of the particles – even the ultrafine, submicron particles.

The Mining CRT utilizes a specially formulated catalyst to also reduce NO2. Diesel fuel is injected between the DPF and the NO2 decomposition catalyst, significantly lowering tailpipe NO2. The fuel injection rate is based on the exhaust gas temperature and engine speed, and advanced sensors monitor backpressure to indicate when filter regeneration is required. The intervals at which ash cleaning is required extend well beyond engine service intervals, minimizing equipment downtime.
